Collin Morikawa is struggling to make the cut at the U.S. Open, currently at 3-over-par after 17 holes.

What happened?

He started the day on the 10th tee and was at 1-under after his first eight holes.

But he bogeyed the 18th, which was his ninth hole of the day, and had three bogeys on his final nine holes.

Why it matters for Collin Morikawa

This puts him in jeopardy of not making the cut, with only the top 60 golfers and ties advancing to Saturday's third round.

Collin Morikawa has missed the cut at the U.S. Open only once, back in 2020, and has finished fourth and fifth in the next two years, respectively.

What comes next?

He will need to improve his score on Friday to make the cut, with morning fog delaying the start of the first round by about two hours.

Another Cal alumnus, Michael Kim, finished his first round with a 1-over-par 71, leaving him seven shots behind leader Wyndham Clark.

Collin Morikawa has won two majors – the 2020 PGA Championships and The Open Championship in 2021, and his best finish at a major since 2021 was a third-place finish at the 2024 Masters.

On Thursday, 49 players had yet to complete their first round, with some golfers having as many as seven first-round holes to play.

The leaderboard is led by Wyndham Clark, who is at 6-under after completing 16 holes on Thursday, four shots ahead of the field.

Collin Morikawa is ranked 10th in the world and will need to improve his score to make the cut and advance to Saturday's third round.
