Collin Morikawa is slowly overcoming his back injury as he steps up his comeback at the U.S. Open. He tweaked his back at the Players Championship on a practice swing in early March.

What happened?

The 29-year-old has been attempting to return ever since, but has noted that he is not 100% better. He was in tied for sixth when he concluded his second round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York.

Current status

Collin Morikawa carded a five-under during Friday’s round on Long Island. Despite the success, the Ryder Cup star admitted he’s still struggling with his back injury.

Injury impact

“It's still a little uncomfortable,” said Morikawa. He added that he can't hit every shot that he wants to hit, particularly with right-to-left wind and an iron.

Upcoming plans

Morikawa earned his spot in the field at the U.S. Open thanks to his past success, including being the winner of the 2021 Open Championship. He was one of the top-60 point leaders in the Official World Golf Ranking as of May 18, 2026.

Collin Morikawa finished tied for seventh at the Masters and tied for fourth at the RBC Heritage almost a month after his withdrawal from the Players Championship. He posted a three-under 32 on the front nine and a 2-under 33 on the back nine during his round at the U.S. Open.

Morikawa recorded seven birdies during his round. His best ever U.S. Open finish came at the Torrey Pines Golf Course in 2021 where he finished tied for fourth.

The driver is getting a little bit more distance out of it, but Morikawa can't hit the high bomb that he wishes on some holes. Thankfully the greens are soft enough right now where he doesn't have to hit the high spinner.

Collin Morikawa is moving a little bit better. He proved it to himself that he has enough tools to go out and play well during his round at the U.S. Open.
